The journey of Leh is not only for the beauty of the place but also for its people. Leh is also known as the challenge each person takes beyond his/her limits. The mountain terrain, its twists and turns, the snow reflection, the low oxygen levels itself is a small challenge compared to the mental preparation it takes.
The dream of most bikers is to ride a bike on these treacherous roads and weather conditions. Enfield is the most popular bike used. Their mountain bikes are seen ridden by bikers with their full gear, Helmets, Knee and elbow Guards, weather proof jackets, Go Pro’s along with good training. The roads are icy at higher altitudes and snow keeps distracting you. The Bikers need to carry their bags at the back of their carriers. I admire each of these bikers coming here with gloves in their hands and go back with fists raised on completing their journey.
I met a cyclist, who has started his journey from Kerala and it took 4 months of cycling to reach Leh. He took a 2 month break in Manali for 2 months. He started his journey in November and reached Leh in May. This is his dream journey and a feat which is unmatched. There are a few unanswered questions which i will surely like to ask him, if i meet him again.
How did he practice for this journey?
What all preparations he did before starting?
How did he adjust to the altitude?
The distance from Kerala to Leh is 3586 km. He has travelled through 12 States and was supported by Volunteer cyclist groups on the way here.
My meeting with him was a mere coincidence. I stopped to talk to a cyclist to have a chat and it turned out to be my brush with a hero.
These journey’s inspire and motivate you to do the unthinkable. Lets all plan and do the unimaginable, challenge ourselves and achieve greater heights.
Which challenge will you take?
